The Columbus Crew: A Tale of Triumph and Legacy

In the heart of Ohio, where the Scioto and Olentangy rivers converge, lies a city with a rich history and a passionate soccer culture—Columbus. Since its inception in 1996, the Columbus Crew SC has been a cornerstone of Major League Soccer, embodying the spirit and resilience of its community.

The Founding Years

The Crew was one of the original teams in MLS, and from the outset, they set a standard for excellence. Brian McBride, the first overall pick in the 1996 MLS Draft, became the face of the franchise. With his aerial prowess and clinical finishing, McBride scored 77 goals for the Crew, leaving an indelible mark on the club's early years.

The Golden Era

The team's fortunes took a turn for the better in the late 2000s. Under the guidance of head coach Sigi Schmid, the Crew clinched their first MLS Cup in 2008. Central to this success was Argentine playmaker Guillermo Barros Schelotto. As the team's first designated player, Schelotto's vision, creativity, and leadership on the field were instrumental in the Crew's championship run. He was named the 2008 MLS MVP and MLS Cup MVP, cementing his status as a club legend.

Defensively, Chad Marshall anchored the backline with consistency and composure. A three-time MLS Defender of the Year, Marshall's dominance in the air and leadership were pivotal in the Crew's successes during his tenure.

Modern-Day Heroes

In recent years, the Crew have continued to build on their legacy. Lucas Zelarayán, a dynamic midfielder, joined the team in 2020 and made an immediate impact. In the MLS Cup final that year, Zelarayán scored two goals and provided an assist, leading the Crew to their second MLS Cup title and earning the MVP honors.

The Columbus Spirit

Beyond the players and trophies, what truly defines the Columbus Crew is the unwavering support of its fans. The "Nordecke," the team's dedicated supporters' group, creates an electric atmosphere at Lower.com Field, ensuring that the Crew's legacy is passed down to future generations.

From the early days at Ohio Stadium to the modern era at Lower.com Field, the Columbus Crew SC stands as a testament to the power of community, passion, and the beautiful game.
